Red Fort

Red Fort

Red Fort: A dominating red sandstone fort in the old city centre built in 1639 under the reign  Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. The fort encompasses various chambers, gardens, a mosque, museum & even a marketplace in the pathway entrance. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Qutub Minar: A towering 72 metre high minaret made of red sandstone in 1193 under the auspices of Mughal ruler Qutub-ud-din Aibak & later Illtutmish. The entire complex has some interesting architectural highlights. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Humayun’s Tomb: Commissioned by Humayun’s first wife in 1869, this is the first garden-tomb of the Indian sub-continent. The tomb itself and other smaller monuments are impressive in their extensive red sandstone livery. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Raj Ghat: This memorial marking the final resting place of Mahatma Gandhi reminds one of the non-violent campaigns undertaken to gain independence for India from the colonial British rule.

Gandhi Smriti: The place where Mahatma Gandhi spent the last 144 days of his life. The entire complex is a museum dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi & displays his personal belongings & articles.

Safdarjung’s Tomb: A red sandstone & marble mausoleum set amidst a garden. It was built in 1754 in the memory of statesman Safdarjung.
